As the lockdown continues, we are starting to see that sports will not be totally back to full

operation this year.

CONDOLENCES

It is with great sadness and on behalf of SAMSA we would just like to send our

condolences to all the family and friends of Mr Mluleki Editor George. He will be missed by all.

This is to sadly inform you about the passing on of Mr Stan Henkeman, Chairperson of the South

African Transplant Sports Association last Friday, 18 December 2020. Mr Henkeman was a

SASCOC family member.

NHSA

In accordance with the stipulations of Section 8(a) of the NHSA Constitution (2016), notice is

hereby given of the fourth Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the NHSA to take place

between15h00 and 17h00 on 19 February 2021, at Rosemary Hill Guest Farm, Donkerhoek, East of Pretoria. Due to Covid related issues the 2019/2020 AGM could not be held in 2020.

Due to Covid Lockdown Regulations, we have to be very rude, and apologize for that please

The AGM may not consist of more than 50 persons. We request members who want to attend to

please send an Email to admin@natshoot.co.za indicating Initials and Surname plus first 7 numbers

of ID so that we can book you. We will be able to accommodate the first 35 members from who we receive Emails in this regard (Natshoot personnel are 15 persons).

ALBERTON SHOOTING CLUB

Please note that the range will be open from Saturday 9th January 2021 and Sunday 10th and 24th January 2021, 7th and the 21st February 2021 and every second Sunday of the month.

Saturday shooting will commence as per usual shooting. The range will open Sunday mornings 08H00 to 12H00. Please assist with range setup on Sundays as everyone would like to shoot on Sunday mornings. Our provincial championships take place on February 13th, Friday 19th and Saturday 20th. Please support our provincial championships as it will be good to see Alberton members in full force and it will be ideal to meet members from other provinces. The air pistol program will commence towards the end of January 2021.We have a team of people that have shown interest in attending the Commonwealth game in India 2022. The program that will start towards the end of January will be a postal shoot competing with shooters in America.

Let’s continue doing the following:

Hopefully one can stop wearing masks soon.

leaves me thinking that it seems that sports will not be totally back to full operation next

year. I am sure everyone agrees that the sport events will still be placed on hold till further

notice of how the second wave of the covid epidemic has affect everyone worldwide.

Condolences

It is with great sadness and on behalf of SAMSA we would just like to send our

condolences to all the Tent Pegging members and to William Guest’s family. He will be

missed by all.

It is also with great sadness that I have to inform you of the passing of Gerhard Bloemhof

.( Shooting)

On behalf of SAMSA we convey our sincere condolence to Madeleine and children and

may God bless the Bloemhof family and give them strength and courage in their

bereavement.

Masters Wrestling

SASSCo and SAPF are looking at sending a team to the 2022 India Commonwealth Shooting

Championships in January 2022.The criteria have been set at a constant 580 or better, 580 on the world stage equates to an 8th place.

Air pistol and Standard pistol are the events that are on offer.

Travel between RSA and India for own account and India to pick up tab for all in-country cost such

as travel and accommodation.

SASSCo and affected associations to look at sponsorship.

Our junior air pistol shooters and anyone interested must attend a meeting at the Alberton range on

Saturday 5th December 2020 at14h00. The juniors must be accompanied by their parents.

Once again, we would like to pass on our thoughts to our SAMSA Family-we hope you are

all still safe and well. We are gradually starting to move back to some normality.

Unfortunately, due to this pandemic, there still has been no sport developing or sport

activities. Hopefully this pandemic will pass as quickly as it came, and all normality will resume in full speed.

We received some feed back from the Golden Oldie Netball Festival that was held in

Hawaii in March this year. It looks like you all had to go through a difficult time, but I am

sure in the end you all enjoyed it and it was worthwhile.

On the 14th March 2020 I left the country to play in the ‘Golden Oldies’ World Netball

Festival in Honolulu, Hawaii, planned to take place from 15 – 22 March. 71 Teams, making

700 participants, attended the festival which is held every 2 years, and members and

players should be over 35 years of age. ‘Golden Oldies’ sport is about ‘Fun, Friendship

and Fraternity’ taking people to all corners of the world they might not have seen. Games

are played for a week with social events included.

We enjoyed the opening ceremony on arrival, and all the scheduled first games which

were played on Monday 16th. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, Honolulu Government

announced the cancellation of all group participating sports on the evening of 16th March.

We are calling all other codes to join SAMSA. Membership fees are R 500. 00 per annum, per code. ALL CODES ARE WELCOME!

Sporting for life - the challenge never ends

The novel coronavirus has impacted sports events globally, with South Africa being no exception. As lockdown continues, with the expectation that the lockdown will be lifted on the 1st of May 2020, the easing of South Africa's strict lockdown will not apply to sports. As the leadership of SAMSA, we believe that this is for the better good, we ask you to stand with us and stay at home. We will be sharing tips for you to stay active and fit at home in our May blog.

Meet the people that continue to bring together Masters players from different sporting codes, promoting the "Sport for life" philosophy, and promoting transformational initiatives within sports.

Petro Saunders - President SAMSA

Petro Saunders has a long history in sports, especially coming from a highly active family. She is a past Netball, Hockey player who is currently focusing on Darts player. She has two Eastern Transvaal colours for Darts under her belt and is an experienced Kickboxing judge, with National Judging colours.

She served on the Gauteng Darts Executive Committee from 2006 to 2010 as a Financial Director. From 2014 -2018 under her leadership the SA Masters darts team won 5 AU championships.

Yogas Reddy – Vice President SAMSA

Yogas Reddy is a professional architect with 21 years of experience in Education, Healthcare, Transportation and Industrial Sectors having worked both internationally and nationally and has been involved in large fast track infrastructure projects in the public sector e.g. FIFA World Cup 2010, etc.

He is an active member of the volleyball sporting community and has participated in several Volleyball Masters international world games. He currently sits on the volleyball Masters committee, promoting ethical sportsmanship and growth of the sport.

Hermien Peens – Treasurer

Hermien Peens is a darts player with national colours and continues to achieve greatness within the sporting code. In 2019 she represented Gauteng at Nationals for Masters where the ladies team came 3rd in the ladies division. Her passion for the sport has motivated her to continue promoting the “sports for life” philosophy.

Marisa Couto – Secretary

Marisa Couto, by profession, is a financial manager, with a strong accounting background, has a passion in assisting business owners and individuals in managing and growing their finances. Sports is in her blood, she comes from a family that has participated, managed, and trained Soccer teams. She played Netball throughout her schooling career and is passionate about leading a balanced life by continuing to contribute to the sporting community positively.

PERSONALITY OF THE MONTH

Personal best achievements: In 1995 I was awarded the United Nations Academic Scholarship, UCT Sports Scholarship, Awarded 5th place and Honorable Mention in

an International Architectural Student Competition and Represented South Africa at the World Student Games in Fukuoka, Japan. Philosophy of Life: Enjoy Life, life passes by too quickly. Favorite food and drink: Portuguese Styled Peri Peri Chicken and Prawns with a cold glass of Coke Zero Favorite Sport: Volleyball Favorite color: Blue

Why did you choose to continue to be active in sports?

I love to compete and physically push myself. Masters Volleyball gives me the opportunity to play the sport I love once a month and enjoy the day with my teammates and other teams.

Please tell us a bit more about your sport journey. The journey started in 1986. As a 15 year old, I formed my own volleyball club with some of my soccer friends and others who didn’t really play sport. I was already participating in various other sports codes but was drawn to Volleyball and was determined to succeed in it.

From 1987 to 1989 I represented my local volleyball district - Kharwastan at the prestigious Inter District Championship. In 1987 I was won the Most Promising Male player award. In my Matric year I was awarded the Sports Boy of the year award. In 1990 I moved to Cape Town to study at UCT. From 1990 to 1992 I was selected in the UCT Volleyball first team, part of the executive and was awarded UCT Sportsperson of Year in 1991 and 1992. I also represented Western Province Students Volleyball team from 1990 to 1992.

I returned to KZN in 1993 and was selected to represent my district Chatsworth at the prestigious Inter District Volleyball Championship and was part of the winning team in 1993 and 1994. I was selected to represent the KZN Senior Males Volleyball Team in 1993 and 1994. In 1995 I returned to UCT for my post Graduate degree. I captained the UCT Volleyball Team in 1995 and 1996 and lead them to two National University Titles. I was awarded Full Blues Colors and Player of the Year for 1995 and 1996 .I was also selected to represent Western Province Volleyball Students Team in 1995 and in 1996 I was appointed captain and lead the team to the SA Students National Inter Provincial Title.

In 1997 I re-joined my local team, Apollo, as captain, and lead them to the VSA National Development Cup Title. From 1997-2001 I represented Chatsworth Volleyball as both a player and administrator and in 1999 was elected President of the Association. From 1998 to 2002 I lead my club Apollo to 5 back to back Top 5 positions at the National Club Championships.

I left South Africa in 2002 for the UK and returned in 2005. I started playing volleyball again socially in 2014. The master’s volleyball tournaments started in 2015 and that’s when I started to get fit enough to be able to participate again. In 2017 a group of friends decided to participate at the World Masters Games in Auckland New Zealand, where we finished 4th in the over 40 categories.

In 2017 I was elected President of the newly formed South African Masters Volleyball Association (SAMVA) and affiliated to SAMSA as our head body. SAMVA has assisted over 60 teams to come back to play master’s Volleyball and is growing every year. I have since played in the 2018 Asia Pacific Games in Penang, Malaysia, the 2019 European Masters Games in Turin, Italy and was part of the management team that won a Silver Medal in the over 40 categories. We are now planning for the 2020 Pan American Games in Brazil.

What are some areas that you believe will become of an increasing importance in the near future for sports in South Africa?

The availability of functioning sporting venues and additional funding to grow the sport. What advice would you offer people aspiring to be more active in Master Sports? First come out to watch, the sport bug will catch, join a team and then start to participate. Who is your role model/ mentor and why?

My first coach Mark Pillai – he was just 19 when he formed a club that consisted of three teams and gave everyone an opportunity to learn and participate in the game of volleyball. He did not wait for a older person to start a club and that inspired me to take on leadership roles from an early age. What is the best advice you have ever been given?

Believe in and Challenge yourself.

What advice would you offer people?

Believe in yourself, and the Challenge never Ends.
